Bayview Health Services Administrator Joel Smith and Director of Nursing Janice Pate were recently surprised as each received a Patriotic Employer Award. This is an award conferred by a

Department of Defense Agency, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), to recognize employers who support their employees service in the Guard and reserve. This support is vital for national security, as the Guard and reserve comprise about half of the total armed forces.

Joel and Janice were nominated for the award by SSgt Jolie-Thao Le, USAFR, who is the Medical Records Coordinator at Bayview. Jolie cited their support and care as the reason she was not only able to fulfill her Air Force reserve duty requirements, but also to care for her mother who has PTSD from her experiences during the War in Vietnam.

In presenting the awards, Bayview resident Allen Raymond, LTC, USA (Ret), observed that Janice and Joel provided this outstanding support during a time when their departments were undergoing severe staff shortages, and yet they not only supported Jolie’s military service but also took care to provide additional support for her personal family needs. This leadership is reflected in the Skilled Nursing Facility’s five star rating.
